An account of the pleasures and pitfalls encountered and endured in the process of editing the 2022 volume 'J R R Tolkien - The Fall of Númenor'. The talk ('paper' is too grandiose description for a Sibley event) will explore the reasoning behind the commission, the challenges of a daunting task and a perilous deadline and the struggle to select, compile, structure (and restructure) the book. Brian will also speak about the joy of working with Alan Lee on choosing subjects for the colour plates and the presentation will include examples of Alan's preliminary sketches for those illustrations and the additional pictures he created for the 2024 Tolkien Calendar.
