In my early days of Tolkien scholarship, I was fortunate enough to meet several of the surviving Inklings and corresponded with others, asking them questions about the group, particularly its origins. Today I’ll be sharing excerpts from some of the letters I received in reply from Owen Barfield, Dr. Humphrey Havard, and Lord David Cecil, as well as others whom we might call ‘Inklings adjacent’—figures such as Mrs. Tanyge Lean and Christopher Wiseman.
